Nine Elders, with our Pastor serving as Moderator, constitute the Session, the local governing body, of Faith Presbyterian Church. We seek now to elect three (3) elders to serve a three (3) year term in the class of 2025. Our current serving elders are:
The current elders who are not serving next year chair these ministry teams: People Growth Missions and Administration/Personnel.
Our Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Order stipulates there shall be a Nominating Committee to see that elder candidates meet the criteria noted below, to assure that the nominees are representative of the overall congregation, and to assure that the candidates are willing to serve if elected. As elected at our January 30, 2022 congregational meeting, the members of the Elder Nominating Committee are Christine Affonso, Barb Stevens and Jim Northrup, along with Session representatives Pam Stephens and Glen Affonso.
This group first began gathering in May, and they continue to prayerfully consider the names to be placed in nomination to allow them to arrive at a ballot for the congregation's consideration and vote. At a congregational meeting in October or November, they will present the names for the congregation's consideration, and nominations will be accepted from the floor prior to our voting for the elders. The Faith folks serving on this committee are also eligible for consideration to serve as elders. Members who feel so called are welcome to self-nominate.
Please consider the list of qualifications below and make your recommendations, with your personal comments. There is no need to discuss with them your intention to submit a person’s name, nor to ascertain from them their willingness or interest in serving. Please submit your nominations by August 28, 2022.
In our Book of Order, the duties of Elders include: exercising leadership, government and discipline, along with Ministers of the Word and Sacrament (pastor); responsibilities for a particular church as well as the church-at-large, including ecumenical relationships. Elders are described as persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment, and their way of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world.
We claim our Lord’s promise that, when two or three of us gather in the name of God, the Holy Spirit is present and active in what we do and say. We believe that your prayerful consideration of candidates allows the Spirit to move in your considerations. We believe that your suggested name(s) are prompted by the Spirit through you. We believe that God’s Spirit is present and active in the deliberations of the Temporary Nominating Committee. And we believe that the Spirit will be present with each candidate as they seek to discern if this is God’s time for them to respond positively to God’s call to service, in this way, at this time, and in this place.
